Screen Time: How to Keep It Healthy and Mindful

Screen Time: How to Keep It Healthy and Mindful

Screen time can be a tricky topic for parents – we all want to make sure our children are learning, entertained, and safe, without feeling like we’re constantly negotiating battles over tablets or TVs. The first thing to know: I do not recommend screen time for children under 2. At this age, it simply isn’t necessary – babies and toddlers learn best through hands-on play, exploration, and connection with the adults around them.

For older toddlers and preschoolers, screens can be used occasionally and mindfully, always choosing content that is age-appropriate, educational, or creatively stimulating. Short sessions are best, and screens should never replace active play, outdoor time, or interaction with caregivers. Setting clear limits and predictable routines helps children understand boundaries and reduces arguments, while encouraging positive habits from the start.

If you’re looking for high-quality shows to use sparingly, here are some favourites that combine gentle storytelling, learning, and fun:

  • Puffin Rock – a calm, nature-themed series that encourages curiosity about the world.
  • Llama Llama – focuses on social-emotional learning through relatable everyday experiences.
  • Gigantosaurus – playful dinosaur adventures with lessons about friendship and problem-solving.
  • Bluey – heartwarming stories about family life, imagination, and play.
  • Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood – builds emotional intelligence and social skills with songs and stories.
  • Sarah & Duck – quirky, slow-paced humour that’s perfect for quiet viewing.
  • Little Bear – classic, gentle adventures teaching kindness and curiosity.
  • Hey Duggee – encourages teamwork, creativity, and outdoor play through short, engaging episodes.

Remember, the key is balance. Use screens as a tool, not a default, and always combine viewing with conversation, play, and interaction. With mindful use and age-appropriate choices, screens can be a positive part of your child’s day without taking away from the joys of real-world learning.
